*Extremely Rare* Antique black lacquered photo album covered with metallic enameled Japanese vegetable and fruit on the cover. The back features an enameled butterfly and praying mantis design. The inside features 76 (!) hand tinted photographs of Japan that are mounted on each side of paperboard and protected with sheets of tissue paper between each photograph. The colors are beautiful and vibrant. This was a popular Japanese tourist art form between 1868-1912 during the Meiji period. It is a distinct possibility this photo album was acquired during the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904, as a family member of the original owner of the album worked there at the time.
